Free Tax Help from Uncle Sam

Every year the West Hempstead Public Library offers AARP tax aides to help you to prepare your forms for Uncle Sam.  Unfortunately, due to scheduling and space issues, many of you are unable to use our services.

Here are additional resources to get free tax help for taxpayers who qualify:

IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) generally offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less. Find a site near you  using the VITA Locator Tool or call 1-800-906-9887.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) offers free tax help for all, with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors. A majority of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide Program. To locate the nearest TCE or AARP Tax-Aide site use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.

The IRS also offers Self-Help Tax Preparation at many VITA and TCE locations for individuals with a simple tax return, who need a little help or do not have access to a computer.  Visit one of the participating tax preparation sites and an IRS-certified volunteer will guide you through the process. Find a site by entering your zipcode on this IRS webpage or by calling 800-906-9887.

The Bethpage Federal Credit Union hosts the VITA program at 12 of its branches in Nassau and Suffolk and some of their volunteers speak Spanish.  You do not need to be a Bethpage FCU member to use their services.  Contact them at 800-628-7070.
